Mesothelioma is a form of cancer which is characterized by the fact that malignant cells are found in the protective saccule which coats the majority of the body's internal organs. The physicians label it mesothelium. However, they are also quick to blame asbestos as the major cause of this sort of cancer if a person breathes in these elements. This illness is quite rare, but grave and in the majority of cases has a lethal outcome. As it's already clear the name mesothelioma comes from mesothelium, a protective sac that coats and shields the majority of the internal organs of the body such as the lungs and heart. The diagnose of mesothelioma is made when cells of the mesothelium get damaged by the swelling. Besides, they can influence and destroy nearby tissues and organs. Mesothelium itself is composed of two sheets of cells: the first sheet outright covers the organ; the other forms a saccule around it. The major function of mesothelium is to produce a lubricating fluid that is released amidst these layers. This allows such moving organs like beating heart and the expansible lungs to glide without any difficulty against adjacent structures. The name mesothelium is rarely applied in relation to cancer processes. The reason for this is that saccules shielding different organs are named in different ways. In this way, coat of the heart is pericardium, coat of the lungs and chest cavity is pleura, coat of the stomach is known as peritoneum. The most widespread location of mesothelioma swelling is pleura. Remember that reproductive organs of men and women are also coated with mesothelium but the cases of mesothelioma cancer in these areas are very rare. The mesothelioma swelling may be in one of two forms: a benign and a malignant version of the cancer. The benign version is not going to lead to the fatal outcome. A diagnosis of malignant Mesothelioma is often fatal, but not always. A Mesothelioma diagnosis was a death sentence about twenty years ago. This is no longer the case. If you, a friend or your loved one is diagnosed with it, don't give up and be persistent in searching for medical treatment.
